Fashion Student Organization Kent State University

That’s a wrap on the Goodwill Fashion show! The annual show that just occurred over the weekend was such a success. With looks featured from some amazing stylists and creative fashionistas, missing this show would’ve been pretty unfortunate. If you were one of the unlucky ones who missed out then don’t fret because we have some of the best highlights straight from the show.

The annual show is a competition based from the unique looks of stylists, who are all members of the Fashion Student Organization. Each stylist must submit a look that is fully thrifted without any exception. While the show is focused around a thrifted look, there is also a theme. In the previous years we have had themes that reflected worldly trends and even a theme that allowed for complete freedom to the stylist’s creativity.

This year, the theme, “Fashion Meets Film”, was based around the inspiration that is seen throughout film favorites. The possibilities were endless and allowed for a huge opportunity to show off some amazing film inspired ensembles. Some of the highlighted looks and audience favorites were inspired from films that may not have been thought of otherwise if it weren’t for some pretty creative fashionistas.

Shannon Carlough channeled her inspiration from the movie Taxi Driver and featured a lovely pair of yellow lens sunnies that really complimented the look and was a definite favorite.

Madi Alten chose to channel her inner baker with the movie Sweeney Todd and gave the audience an eye-catching look. The uniqueness and detail won her look a well-deserved first place.
Each year as the Fashion Student Organization begins to grow, the diverse talent of our members develops just as quickly. As we begin a very anticipated wait for next year’s show, the stylists talent will be sure to evolve and impress us all just as much, if not more than years past.

It's been said more times this year than we can count: we really have the most amazing board and group of members to date. To think that the Goodwill Personal Styling Fashion Show sold double the amount of tickets as last year, even though it was cancelled and rescheduled last minute, is amazing. Nobody, the board included, has a chance to really see the looks before show night. We were running on bling faith that the volunteers, hair + makeup team, and stylists wouldn't let us down. And you guys certainly did not disappoint.

Our theme this year, Designer Driven, was meant to give our members a direction without boxing them into a specific look. From a board that has 4 graduating senior, we couldn't be more thankful and proud of how our last ever FSO show finished. You guys seriously rock.
See ALL of the photos from the show on our Facebook page!
Thanks to the every amazing photographers: Madison Gander, Sarah Rosenson and Wing Lip.

After our recent Goodwill Personal Styling Fashion Show, we had a chance to talk with Maddie Meinhardt, the winning stylist, about her outfit. Keep reading to learn her tips on thrifting, a possible career in styling and her designer inspiration!

Stylist: Maddie Meinhardt
Major: Fashion Merchandising
Year: Senior
FSO: Did you know from the beginning that you wanted to find something that was inspired by Dolce & Gabbana?
MM: Yes, Dolce & Gabbana is one of my favorite luxury designer brands. When I heard about the "Designer Driven" theme, D&G was one of the designers that immediately popped into my mind as a perfect inspiration. I love how elaborate and intricate the details of their designs are.

FSO: What thrift store(s) did you visit to style this amazing look?
MM: I went to The Village Discount Outlet. It is a thrift store in Cuyahoga Falls. It is a huge store with such a large selection. I've participated in this show for four years, and every year I have been able to find some great looks at The Village.
FSO: What was your favorite part of putting the look together?
MM: I was really excited when I found the floral jacket! The shape, colors and intricate floral pattern perfectly inhibit a Dolce & Gabbana feel. It really screamed Dolce & Gabbana to me. When I found this piece I knew I was going to be able to put together an awesome D&G look. I also like mixing prints, so I am glad I was able to incorporate that into this look.

FSO: Do you see yourself wanting to pursue a career in styling?
MM: I think styling is so much fun, and it is a career path that really excites me. I have certainly had a great time styling outfits for this show the past four years. I will definitely be looking for future opportunities to style.
FSO: Having won the Goodwill Personal Styling Show last year as well, what are some tips you can share with us on how to find designer inspired looks for less?
MM: You definitely have to go in with a vision and idea in mind. Look for pictures or images that you want to mimic or that inspire you and bring them with you. This year I was inspired by the Dolce & Gabbana spring 2015 runway show, so I saved some of my favorite looks from the collection to my phone for me to refer to while I was shopping. You also have to have an open mind. You won't find the exact same pieces, but you must be innovative to recreate the same effect they have with similar pieces you do find.

Thanks Maddie! We absolutely loved your look and can't wait to see where your career takes you after graduation.

PS—Below is a sneak peak at the rest of the pictures coming to the blog, Facebook and Instagram this week!
