Fashion Student Organization Kent State University

Hello, fashionistas and fasionistos with school really kicking off, summer is slowly beginning to become a distant memory. However, to keep the magic of summer alive, we are ending the Adventures of a Fashionista series with my trip to Niagara Falls. Recently, I took a weekend trip to Niagara Falls, Canada, to explore and take in the magical views of the falls. Only a four-hour drive from Kent State, Niagara Falls is the perfect weekend trip to take during the semester when you’re short on money and time, but need a little trip to get away. Here are my top five picks of things to do at Niagara Falls:

5. Floral Showhouse

The floral showhouse at Niagara Falls puts on a wonderful display of flowers, succulents, and tropical plants. For only $5 you can explore the greenhouse and the outdoor grounds, both full of lush greenery. This place is nice to spend an hour at walking around admiring the flowers in full bloom, no matter what season it may be.

4. Queen Victoria Place Restaurant

By far the best restaurant I ate at during the whole trip. Not only was the food good and fresh, the views were amazing. Located diagonally from the falls, you may even get some mist on you while sitting on the patio.

3. Journey Behind The Falls

For $17.50 you can take the journey down 150 feet to the base of the falls to get a different view of the 13 story falls. At the bottom, you can venture out onto the viewing deck, but be warned you will leave slightly wet. Although ponchos are provided they are no match to the falls. After checking out the view from the observation deck, you can venture through the tunnels that take you directly behind the falls where you can see the water rushing down.

2. Butterfly Conservatory / Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens

The Butterfly Conservatory, which is located inside the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, was one of my favorite places to explore. The Conservatory is home to over 2,000 butterflies, all of which will be flying around you from flower to flower. If you’re lucky some may even land right on you. After watching the butterflies, you can head outside and walk around the spacious Botanical Gardens which contains a rose garden, vegetable plants, and many, many more fresh flowers.

1. Niagara Falls

The falls are hands down the main attraction to see. Viewing of the falls can take place anywhere around the city, either on the Skylon Tower, SkyWheel, or just walking to the viewing sites. While walking around the falls I recommend following the paths that lead past the falls for some nice views of the river before it all rushes down to the bottom of the falls.

With the end of summer approaching, many of us students are preparing to start another semester at Kent State. Some may be looking forward to getting back on the beautiful campus at Kent; however, others may have a different, exciting adventure in store from abroad! While I thought packing for a dorm in college was difficult, packing for an entire semester all within a few suitcases is an entirely different feat. But don’t worry! I (along with some advice from other classmates) have managed to come up with a few tips to make packing a little bit easier on you for your time abroad!

New York City has so many hidden gems that are full of unique characteristics, but unless you have enough time to discover them for yourself or have the “in”, those places can be a little bit of a challenge to discover.

Luckily, we have some of the best coffee shops, brunch spots and even nightlife that we are going to share exclusively to you!

Now we all need our morning coffee, and Starbucks in the city is just not gonna cut it. Based on two popular boroughs, take these two for a go and you will see why that extra stop on the subway is worth commuting to.

Manhattan:
  • Kaffe 1668: We can't promise you will spot Anna Wintour, but located in lower Manhattan only a few blocks from Conde Nast, you will totally love this atmosphere.
275 Greenwich Street (Cross streets: Warren Street, Murray Street)
New York, NY 10007
  • FIKA: Luckily this favorite is very accessible. It is a shop with multiple locations throughout Manhattan but if you're looking for a nice rooftop with chic furniture, go for the location on 10th ave in Hell’s Kitchen.
566 10th Ave 10036 New York
  • Ralph's Coffee: Shopping in 5th Ave can be tiring so make sure you stop into Polo Ralph Lauren and find the hidden coffee shop (hint: the second floor) and grab some energy in a classic and fancy environment.
2nd Floor, 711 5th Ave, New York, NY 10022
  • L Train Vintage: We ALL love thrifting that one garment that makes your heart happy, but imagine having a hidden gem in every rack. That is exactly what you will find in this amazing, beautiful and perfect manhattan and brooklyn based thrift store chain. While they have many locations off of multiple stops on the L train (hence the name), I find that the manhattan store is always the best. It is in the East Village and is next to some of the best vintage and consignment stores that NYC has to offer!
1377 Dekalb Ave, New York, 11221
  • If you’re into a more grungy scene and are looking for some real New York flare, the Lower East Side (LES) is where it’s at! More specifically, going to Saint Marks is your best bet. Don’t be surprised when you find dresses made from screws and leather or platform boots that will make even the most Hot Topic lover shocked because the freaks come out and are ready to play when in St. Marks! It’s totally a fun experience and I love the adventures that are there.
                   8th Street/St. Mark’s Place in Manhattan

Brooklyn:

  • Brooklyn is like the coffee shop mecca but because traveling deeper into Brooklyn (aka outside of Williamsburg and Bushwick), make sure you stop into Toby’s Estate Coffee Shop. You will not regret it. Trust me.
125 North 6th Street
Brooklyn, NY
  • Beacon's Closet: Because we travelled all the way into Brooklyn from Manhattan, make sure you stop in and find your new favorite jacket in Beacon's Closet. Located right by Toby’s Estate, this trendy consignment store is full of amazing finds that your closet NEEDS to have.
74 Guernsey St
Brooklyn, NY 11222
  • Kent Avenue in Williamsburg: Our last favorite stop is one that money can't buy. This view is free to stare into and is worth every moment. Enjoy the entire skyline of Manhattan and try to spot your favorite landmarked building. Mine is the Chrysler Building...can you spot it? Tip: Go during “golden hour” (sunset) or during the evening when the lights are shining bright!

Queens:
  • If you are up for an adventure that is a little out of the way, hop on the N or Q train and explore the Museum of the Moving Image. It’s artistic and definitely fits the neighborhood vibe that is Astoria.
36-01 35th Ave, New York, NY 11106
Enjoy the city and if you find yourself with some free time and are not sure what to explore next, just hop on a train and get off in a random station. Explore! You can’t get too lost in NYC. If you’re sticking to Manhattan, just walk. If you come across water you’ve reached the east or west side and you can just make a quick turn around. Have fun!
