Fashion Student Organization Kent State University

Introducing Annie! She is this year (and the first ever) recipient of the FSO scholarship. Honestly, we're beyond excited for her. Reading through this interview, you can feel the passion and gratitude through her words. We are really excited to see how her college time, and future career, pan out. We have no doubt about her success.

FSO: First, tell us a little about yourself!
Annie Skoch: I am freshman who is currently pursuing a major in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Entrepreneurship. I have always dreamed of pursuing a career in fashion. I grew up loving to sew and selecting outfits for my fashion-challenged sister, so I fell in love with the idea of working with individuals to develop products for the fashion industry. I love  to sew, create, and design for fun. I currently have an online Etsy shop, Pink In Mind Design, where I sew and create custom jewelry and purses for a wide spectrum of customers. I've had this little business since I was thirteen, and I've loved seeing the business grow and where my products end up around the world. At Kent, I work in the KSU Theater Costume Shop where I help with the construction of the costumes used in the Kent Theater Productions. It is an awesome experience and I love being involved with fashion and theater when I work. At home, I work in a formal dress consignment boutique, Say Yes to Her Dress, where I'm learning the trades of running a small and fashionable business -- something I want to do when I graduate from Kent State! In my free time (that is, when I'm not working on Visual's homework), I love shopping the latest trends, getting outdoors, and spending time with friends.

FSO: What was your first reaction when you found out you were awarded the first-ever FSO Scholarship?
AS: When I found out I won the first ever FSO Scholarship, I was so excited and felt honored! I absolutely love being apart of FSO and felt extremely blessed to be chosen by an amazing organization. When I found out I was awarded the scholarship, I was in my Fashion Technology class and was told my William. He gave me a big hug and I was so excited I could barely focus for the rest of class! I am so thankful to the FSO board and William for this great opportunity.
FSO: What is your favorite memory from being a member of FSO?
AS: My favorite memory from being a member of FSO has been the fashion shows that have been produced by the organization. I have loved seeing the process in which a fashion show is produced and the final product after all the hard work! It is also so cool to see all the amazing designs and creations fellow members create in the matter of weeks. It is such a fun memory and I cannot wait for the fashion shows in years to come!

FSO: What have you learned from FSO so far in your college career?
AS: I have learned a great deal from FSO that has helped me (and will help me) in my college career. FSO has provided me with information about fashion merchandising, the intricacy of the industry, and the risks and rewards involved in the fashion world. FSO has also encouraged me to challenge myself, to work hard inside and outside of class, and to be aware that fashion is omnipresent.
FSO: What is your dream job upon graduation?
AS: My dream job upon graduation is to open up a fashion boutique somewhere around Cleveland. It would be amazing if I could expand my Etsy shop even more and open a store front with my handmade items. I love being in an industry with a large variety of occupations available. Along with my business, I would love to work in some kind of Product Development field, where I could experience both the merchandising and design elements of fashion.

There is so much talent that comes out of the fashion school at Kent. We know how much you guys loved hearing from Tessa at Neighbors Apparel last semester. This semester we wanted to introduce you to Sandra and Kiara, recent KSU grads and fashion design majors, who started their own company after graduation. Read on to learn more about their designs, their lives and get advice on running your own business.

Name: Sandra Campbell & Kiara Tillman
Major/Minors in College: Fashion Design–Technical Track (Graduated Spring 2013)
Current Job: Co-Founders and Designers of The Flytrapp

Tell us a little about yourself!
SC: I grew up in Washington, DC and still reside in the area. As a child I was very observant and contemplative and always lived inside my head. I would take my nubile fascination of nature, arts, diversity of culture in my family and the city, and plain simple ideas and retreat into whatever world I could create from those influences. In ways, I am still that child because life never ceases to fascinate and inspire me.

KT: I’m originally from Syracuse, NY. I've been designing and drawing fashion illustrations since elementary school. People have this misconception that fashion designers are living this glitz & glam lifestyle, but I'm just an ordinary girl. I love to eat everything, watch movies and workout at the gym. I have a vocational training certification in fashion technology, interned with Design Lab Inc. and job shadowed at Justice (formerly known as Limited Too) for winning the Rock the Runway Fashion Show!
Did you have any favorite classes from your time in fashion school?
SC: I really loved my Art History courses, especially those centered around African culture and masquerading cultures around the world. My favorite design class was taught by Professor Sandra Murphy during my semester at Kent’s NYC Studio. She really pushed us to dig deep and push ourselves conceptually.
KT: My favorite teachers were Professors Tameka Ellington and Archana Mehta, which taught a bulk of my sewing and drawing classes. They were the most stressful ones, but I learned a lot and they’ve molded me into the designer I am today.
What inspired you to start The Flytrapp?
SC: Our brand uses the concept of flight in many ways to illustrate women coming into their own personality and sense of style. The Flytrapp aims to take a global and open-minded approach to portray an “urban” girl lifestyle. In essence, we want The Flytrapp to embody the woman who will be what she wants to be and take flight when she is ready—no matter her circumstances.

KT: Like many recent grads who couldn’t afford to move to a major fashion city, we were desperate for action. We both wanted to start our own clothing line and when Sandra found out that I was currently living in DC, she contacted me. Our first brainstorm meeting was in her basement. It’s been a journey ever since!

What has been the best moment for you, since starting your company?
SC & KT: We launched our very first Spring and Summer collection at DC Fashion Week back in September. We opened an online fundraising campaign and raised nearly $1,000 to help us showcase. It was our first fashion show and it honestly couldn’t have been possible without our supporters.

Are there any difficulties that you didn't expect about being a business owner & designer?
SC: We’ve been running this business on our own with little to zero guidance for almost a year and are learning something new everyday. I guess structuring and being financially stable is the hardest part. Unless you’re financially set, being a starving and emerging artist is the real deal. I work as a Center Consultant at FeDex and Kiara currently works at Macy’s as a Visual Merchandiser. Any little money earned is imperative to our business’s efforts and as we continue to grow, hopefully working additional jobs won’t be an issue for our business.

What advice would you give to students interesting in starting a business?
SC & KT: You have to dedicate a lot of time and creativity to your business. Follow your own path and at your own pace because there is no right or wrong way. Always gather and organize your resources and be prepared to do plenty of research. Pay attention to what's really going on around you and know your customer! This will help you effectively target your market.

We're super excited to be introducing today's Fashionista Feature: Dana. From her new internship at CollegeFashionista to her love of magazines, she sure has a way with words. That, along with her love of the fashion industry, are just some of the things we adore about her.

Name: Dana Rausch
Major/Minor: Fashion Merchandising/Fashion Media
Year: Sophomore, but it’s my first year on this campus and in the fashion program!

Tell us a little about yourself!
DR: My name is Dana Rausch. I’m a Fashion Merchandise major with a Fashion Media minor. I’m a sophomore and will be graduating in 2017. I love writing and am actually interning with CollegeFashionista this semester and writing for them as a Style Guru. Other than fashion, I love shopping, unhealthy foods, exercising (necessary because of the unhealthy food) and music. Singing is another one of my passions, and I’ve recently learned how to play guitar as well.

What has been your favorite class in the fashion school so far?
DR: I really love Dr. Leslie, so I always looked forward to Fundamentals. But I think my favorite class was Intro to Tech. I’d never really worked much with Adobe before, but I loved it so much. I really enjoyed the projects, even though they stressed me out sometimes. Making croquis and drawing flats in Illustrator got me extremely exited for the rest of time here in the Fashion School.
{Dana on the right }
Do you have a favorite FSO memory?
DR: I loved when Tessa Reeves from Neighbors Apparel came to talk to us. She really opened my eyes to a whole new world of fashion. I had no idea that there were refugees living in Akron, and I think it’s so amazing that Tessa can help refugee women through fashion. I definitely learned a lot from Tessa.

What are you looking forward to this year?
DR: I think the fashion shows this next semester are what I’m most looking forward to. I’m really excited to be a part of the Annual Fashion Show and to see everyone’s amazing designs. The Goodwill Show is something else I’m excited about! I can’t wait to style outfits and see them walk down the runway.

Do you have any jobs in mind for post graduation?
DR: Oh I would love to write for an editorial magazine. I think Elle would be my first choice and Vogue would be my second. Magazines are what made me fall in love with fashion, so I would love to write for one and hopefully inspire some people someday!

There are always members who stand out from the beginning. Their dedication to FSO is inspiring and their passion is contagious. Madison is one of those members. As a first year fashion major, we already know this is definitely the place for her & she's going far places.

Name: Madison Gander
Major/Minor: Fashion Merchandising / Fashion Media
Year: Third year at Kent (previous nursing major) / first year fashion student

Tell us a little about yourself!
MG: Fashion inspired and obsessed, I love everything about fashion school and couldn't be more thankful to have switched from nursing. I love being involved in the fashion school and want to continue to be more involved.

What has been your favorite class in the fashion school so far?
MG: My favorite class has to be visuals so far because I love making mood boards and Dr. Hahn made the class so fun yet still challenging for me and I know the projects and information will benefit me in the future. I also loved technology because illustrator and Photoshop came natural to me, and who doesn't love William Perrine....

How long have you been involved with FSO?
MG: This is my first year being involved with FSO

This is a scarf Madison designed from images she took at AoC2014.
Do you have a favorite FSO memory?
MG: My favorite FSO memory would have to be doing photography for Art of Contrast. It was such a fun experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

What are you looking forward to this year?
MG: I look forward to going with FSO to New York hopefully in the spring!

Do you have any dream jobs in mind for post graduation?
MG: I hope to one day work for a major designer (Chanel, Prada). FSO has made my first semester in fashion school so much fun and every meeting has been so beneficial to me and I look forward to two more years of FSO!

We have so many incoming freshman this year in FSO. Gabby is one of those students, who's so excited to get involved, not only in our organization but in the Fashion School in general. Get to know her—we think she's going to be one to watch in the coming 4 years.
Name: Gabby Chaffin
Major/Minors: Fashion Merchandising/Fashion Media/Journalism
Year: Freshman - 2018

Tell us a little about yourself!

GC: Hello! My name is Gabby. I am a freshman this year at Kent State University and my major is Fashion Merchandising. I am originally from Niles, Ohio, so I'm not too far away from home. In my spare time I like to go adventuring, volunteer and spend time with friends & family. I am obsessed with I Love Lucy re-runs, Chipotle, Cats, Thrifting and Pinterest. In the future, I hope to do a lot of traveling because there's just so much to learn and see. I cannot wait to either study abroad or even just study in NYC. I am so excited to be starting my first year of college and learning all that I need to know about my favorite subject: Fashion.

What has been your favorite class in the fashion school so far?
GC: So far, Fashion Fundamentals. Dr. Leslie is so cool, and I love that I get to learn about something I'm actually interested in!

How long have you been involved with FSO?
GC: I'm new to FSO this year but I am so excited to get involved!

Do you have a favorite FSO memory?
GC: Well, at the first FSO meeting, a girl complimented me on my eyebrows...does that count? lol

What are you looking forward to this year?
GC: There's honestly so much to look forward to! But I really love fashion shows and the creativity they evoke. I cannot wait to style and model my outfit at the Goodwill Fashion Show!

I am also really looking forward to attending the Shop.org event in Seattle, Washington. I just think it’s going to be such an incredible experience to learn from some of the industries’ most successful leaders about digital retailing and the way technology is being integrated into the future of marketing. I think it'll also be a great opportunity to network and meet new people, so I'm really excited to participate.

Do you have any dream jobs in mind for post graduation?
GC: I've always had a strong attraction, (and maybe addiction), to editorial fashion. I love pictures that have a story to tell and designs that make my friends say, "Who would even wear that?". I also like to write. I guess my dream job would be to work for an editorial magazine like Harper's Bazaar or Vogue.

This week we're talking to another FSO favorite. Olivia is a senior who's been more than involved with FSO and that fashion school. From her dream job at Kleinfeld's (where she interned!!) to her favorite classes, we think you're going to enjoy getting to know her. Meet Olivia.

Name: Olivia Mayer
Major/Minors: Fashion Merchandising
Year: Senior (Graduation May 2015)

Tell us a little about yourself!
OM: My name is Olivia Mayer and I'm a senior fashion merchandising major graduating in August of 2015. I also have a minor in fashion media. I spent this past summer interning in New York City at Kleinfeld Bridal. I had the experience of a lifetime and made connections with so many people in the industry.

What has been your favorite class in the fashion school so far?
OM: My favorite class during my time at the fashion school was professional seminar because it really got me ready to apply for internships. It also made me so much more confident in myself as a fashion student.

How long have you been involved with FSO?
OM: I have been a part of FSO as a member since my freshman year at Kent State, although I didn't start getting involved with it until last year. I participated in the Goodwill fashion show earlier this year as a stylist and modeled my own look. I also was a model in the FS squared fashion show at the end of the year. I had a lot of fun modeling both of the times and I look forward to the shows that FSO will have this semester before I head off to Florence in the spring!
Do you have a favorite FSO memory?
OM: My favorite FSO memory was this past year’s goodwill fashion show. It was fun getting to put together an outfit for the show and also walk to the runway in it

What are you looking forward to this year?
OM: I’d say the FSO Art of Contrast fashion show and also studying abroad in Florence in the spring!

Do you have any dream jobs in mind for post graduation?
OM: My dream job post graduation would be to work at Kleinfeld Bridal in NYC.

When we decided to start this new feature on the FSO blog, it wasn't hard to choose who should be spotlighted first. Jaanai has been one the most dedicated, inspiring and fun members from the start of his freshman year. We love how much passion and excitement he brings, not only to FSO but the fashion school in general! Meet Jaanai.

Name: Jaanai Jones
Major/Minors: Fashion Design
Year: Sophomore (Graduation May 2017)

Tell us a little about yourself!
JJ: My name is Jaanai Jones. I am a Fashion Design major at Kent State. I love ice cream, Seinfeld and SHOES. I am a huge flora enthusiast. I love making prints and different patterns. My background for fashion design comes from the curiosity of how clothing and accessories are constructed and the details put into them. I love to sew. In my free time, I research trends (WGSN is the best), knit and regularly work out. I joined FSO because I wanted to get involved with the fashion school outside of class, and it was also a great way to meet more people.

What has been your favorite class in the fashion school so far?
JJ: I’ll always love sewing, but my favorite freshman class was Intro to Fashion Technology with William Perrine (love that guy). So far, my favorite sophomore class is Fashion Tech Applications. It’s all so refreshing; a lot of the technology-based work involving fashion design is new. I love where fashion is headed in terms of integrating technology into the clothing and industry, so that may be why I love the tech side of it all.

How long have you been involved with FSO?
JJ: I have been involved with FSO since Fall 2013 (my freshman year).

Do you have a favorite FSO memory?
JJ: My favorite FSO memory definitely was painting the rock! It was a great way to end the year and see the seniors do something fun with FSO one final time before they graduated.

What are you looking forward to this year?
JJ: There are a lot of fun activities planned, but I am looking forward to the fashion shows the most. I love fashion shows. I can’t wait to design for them this year and have girls walking in my clothes down the runways.

Do you have any dream jobs in mind for post graduation?
JJ: My absolute dream job would be to design footwear for Nike. I am really passionate about footwear; almost any footwear design roles would be suitable. Perhaps it will happen! Realistically, if that doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t mind working for J Crew. I love their style and I love how Jenna Lyons helped reshape the brand from the old “frat boy prep” they used to portray.
