Oh New York Fashion Week...how we always wish we would be lucky enough to sit front row at any of the numerous shows that take place during the most glamorous week in New York. While some students are lucky enough to help out backstage, your own FSO board was stuck here dreaming of all of the beautiful clothes that debuted for Fall/Winter 2016. Today, each board member will be sharing their top picks from this season's New York Fashion Week.

Hannah's Favorites:
Alice + Olivia - The presentation itself was stunning. I have a friend and (KSU Fashion School Alumni) who is an assistant designer for A + O and seeing her work presented so beautifully was such a surreal thing. The models were places so casually. Some were active doing things like painting, while others were just posed strategically with props. As always, the designs were intricate and the line highlighted brilliant prints. This season the color palette was very 70's inspired and it was spot on aesthetically.

Derek Lam - This collection is one that speaks to my personal style the most. Its smart, simplistic, well-curated, while still being a bit luxurious. The line was vast, with such a range of looks that all worked together effortlessly. The coats were to die for!

Rachel Zoe - To be honest, I'm not always a Rachel Zoe fan, but this season she completely blew me away. The all white looks for fall were incredible but she really wowed me with her sheer black pieces and the pops of vibrant patterns.

Sabrina's Favorites:

The Row - The Row is always so refined and elegant which is the style I'm naturally drawn to; I especially like the high-waisted trousers for this season!

Fenty x Puma - I like what Rihanna is doing with Puma and transforming the brand and making it relevant to today's society. The punk grunge was fun, and the hair/makeup was out of this world!

Yeezy - The fact that Kanye West packed 20,000 into Madison Square Garden for his third Yeezy show is spectacular. The fan base is fierce and I love the energy that seeps into his fashion brand. Even though I'm not the biggest fan of his clothing, I appreciate how he executes his shows every season.

Claire's Favorites:

Oscar de la Renta - Oscar de la Renta never disappoints with its clean lines and attention to detail. This year's line was focused on a cinched waist. I loved this concept because it was a more classic version of the "fit and flare" dress that has been a staple for far too long.

Coach - I loved their concept of incorporating iconic American stereotypes throughout their 75 years of business. Coach seamlessly mixed 70s colors with the silhouettes and hemlines of the 50s. In order to make it modern, Coach added metallic touches that I think perfectly meshed their 75 years of style.

Tracie's Favorites:
Mara Hoffman - I adored the vibes from this collection. The 1970's has been a favorite trend of mine all season long and I am so happy that it will still be around for Fall/Winter 2016. I can totally see myself wearing the majority of this collection, especially any of those gorgeous maxi dresses.

Tommy Hilfiger  - I always cannot wait to see what Tommy Hilfiger comes up with as a theme for his show. Even though my favorite by far was his football field for Fall 2015, I thought the nautical boat was so unique and entertaining. Tommy Hilfiger does not really fit my personal style, but I really want some of the jackets from this collection!

Alice + Olivia - I so wish I could have attended this presentation! I followed along with some of my favorite fashion bloggers on their Snapchats while they attended, and I adored the atmosphere of the show. The song "People" sung by Barbra Streisand was playing while models were staged in various everyday scenes themed in the 1970's. It was like the perfect fashion dream for me. I would honestly wear about 75% of the collection, and I was in love with the embroidered flare jeans.

Dana's Favorites:

Maiyet - I love Maiyet's collection so much because of all the different textures and textiles used throughout the entire collection. (Textile geeks unite!)

Rosie Assoulin - Rosie Assoulin has been a favorite of mine for a few years now; I always love the unique lines and architectural details she uses in all of her pieces.

Mara Hoffman - Mara Hoffman's jumpsuits stole my heart this season. Loud prints, 70's inspired silhouettes and gowns with the *perfect* amount of volume are a few other reasons Mara Hoffman's show is one of my favorites.

Meghan's Favorites:

Prabal Gurung - This collection was without a doubt my favorite for Fall 2016! Because I’m a always a sucker for interesting textures, I fell in love with his way of mixing knit sweaters into evening wear and using fur, leather and satin together perfectly to create a breathtaking collection!

Monique Lhuillier - Although I don’t tend to wear prints that often, I appreciate a collection that can beautifully mix unexpected prints together and I think this collection did exactly that. I love how the vibrant reds, greens and pinks juxtaposed with deeper shades of navy, green and black in her prints.

Jason Wu - I could see myself wearing a ton of looks from this collection especially with the dark color palette. I loved the silhouettes that carried throughout the collection including structured dresses, off the shoulder looks and oversized coats.

Today we are featuring Miranda Skitzki, the winner of Best Collection from Art of Contrast! Miranda is a sophomore fashion design major. It took Miranda about five days total (36-40 hours) to complete her collection consisting of three looks.  Carrie Esser, Sophia Termine, and Olivia Suchko modeled her glamorous gold and red collection.

"My design process started with scouring Pinterest for anything that would fit the theme and then using those images to develop a concept of what I wanted to create.  From there I made some rough sketches to get my ideas down on paper.  I then met with my models to introduce myself, show them my ideas and explain my concepts, and get their feedback about how they would feel wearing my looks on the runway.  After purchasing my fabrics, I started the construction process by making rough patterns and making trial pieces of the new techniques I wanted to use.  I then sewed the final garments and had model fittings before taking care of the finishing touches.  My final step in creating the garments was hand-painting the detailing and placing the rhinestones.  Lastly, I chose accessories, planned out hair and makeup for my models, and prepared to rock the show!"

"My inspiration was the shapes and silhouettes of traditional Indian dress, particularly wedding attire.  I really love the intricate beading and embellishment as well as the bold reds and golds in those garments. "

"I hand-painted all the gold details and carefully placed the rhinestones on all three looks.  I really wanted this collection to make a statement by creating a modern and edgy look while still keeping a traditional Indian feel."

"My biggest challenges were second guessing myself about the cohesiveness of my collection and patience while adding all the embellishment. "

Congrats Miranda!

Today we are featuring the winner of Best Designer from Art of Contrast: A Night in Bollywood! Bin Zhou is a freshman fashion design major here at Kent State. Keep on reading to hear more about his design process and what inspired his winning Bollywood design!

"For Art of Contrast, I thought about many ways to approach it, but ultimately, I decided on something that is inspired by Bollywood, but not in a literal sense. So when I chose the fabric, I didn't want to choose a really bold color, but instead went for a pastel blue, and a softer palette tone. In Indian culture, their works include lots of beading, embroidery, and embellishments. Since I shopped at JoAnn's fabrics, I didn't have a whole lot of resources. So I chose this lace with metallic gold in it, and I used that as my trims and appliques for the jumpsuit. Then, I bought another light blue lace and made a bolero with a hoodie."

"My aesthetic is pretty much something that is fitted, beautiful, and functional. I went for a romper because I didn't want to go with the traditional route of making a crop top with a skirt or pants. I felt like a fitted romper that has flared shorts would accentuate my models legs and making the silhouette aesthetically pleasing. I went for a hooded bolero because I was inspired by the veils that they wear in Indian culture, but I just didn't want to do a literal version of it. "

"To be completely honest, I am a person that works very well under pressure. I spent a lot of time looking on the Internet, and finding fashions that were inspired by Bollywood. I couldn't find much, but what I saw were a lot of dresses and gowns, so I thought that a jumpsuit romper would be a great choice. There were some miscommunications during this process, but my model and I finally had fittings towards the week before the garment was due. The actual outfit wasn't started until the Saturday before the due date, and that's because I like to know for sure what I'm doing, and I'm a very indecisive person.  But I am glad that everything turned out ok, and I had a blast doing this project!"

Congrats Bin!
